Halasz's book The Bohemian Ethos: Questioning Work and Making a Scene on the Lower East Side (Routledge, 2015) explores the creative output and political, economic, cultural, and social impact and significance of various downtown New York bohemian generations including the Beats, counterculture, underground, and more recent iterations.

Her other research projects focus on affordable housing, neighborhoods, and urban redevelopment, paying special attention to gentrification and racial-ethnic inequality in New York City.

She has also published on and worked in film and theater.
