Congrats to author Kevin Allen! The Hidden Agenda: A Proven Way to Win Business and Create a Following, is out today! We spoke with Kevin about the process of publishing and writing a book. He offers some great words of wisdom:

  • Writing a book is an opportunity to appreciate the people who got you where you are today.
  • Knowing when to put the pen down can be the biggest challenge.
  • Always be yourself.

Thanks Kevin and congratulations, once again.

What inspired you to write a book?

After 20 years pitching for my supper around the globe and leading companies to achieve what they sought, I realized I derived my joy from seeing the people coming up in the business win. To be even a small part of helping them do this is sheer magic for me. So I thought, what a great thing to do to collect all I have learned and share it.

What has been your favorite part of the process?

Recalling all of the amazing moments in my career on Madison Avenue. Perhaps most important was recalling, and even getting back in touch, with my mentors who taught me so much. They were not only wildly colorful, but also hugely insightful.

Have there been any unexpected challenges in writing the book?

After hearing people talk about blank pages, grueling quota, the drudgery, I was a bit apprehensive, but to be honest, I loved every minute of it. In some ways it was knowing when to put the pen down!

If you could start over again what advice would you give yourself?

It took me far too long in my career (thankfully not too late) to understand that the way to be successful, to move people to follow you, or connect with the audience, is to be yourself. No matter the eccentricities, or the things you might think are not perfect, or “pure business,” these are indeed the things people follow you for: your true, genuine, authentic self.

Any more books in your future?

Well, I am just now enjoying the heady experience of being a first time author. I am certain to do it again. I’ll just have to say, stay tuned!
