A large part of human communication is emotional communication, involving minute signals concerning closeness and distance, and dominance and submission. This information is of central importance in organizing interactions with significant others.     Susan M. Johnson, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and Director of the Marital and Family Therapy Clinic, Civic Hospital, Ottawa. Leslie S. Greenberg, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at York University, Canada.
