This book is part of the Phoneme Factory Project undertaken by Granada Learning in partnership with the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit (SLTRU) in Bristol.

It aims to provide guidance for teachers, SENCos, SLTs and parents regarding:

    • criteria for referral to speech and language therapy
    • phonological disorders
    • appropriate intervention approaches that can be used in the classroom and at home.

Complementing the book are downloadable resources including a picture library for the classroom and the home, as well as checklists and other time-saving documents.

Speech and language - complexities and assumptions.  How we produce speech sounds and the organisation of sounds in language.  Phonological development.  Activities for specific speech processes.  Practical strategies for managing children with speech disorders and delays in the classroom - home school diary, crib sheet, spending one to one time with clear contextual clues, responding to misunderstanding, listening to the speech disordered child read, augmentive and alternative communication systems (AAC), teaching children about how to 'repair conversational breakdown', practising target words, ideas to implement every day with no preparation
