      Biography

      Ann Montague-Smith was formerly Principal Lecturer in Primary Education at University College Worcester, UK.

      Tony Cotton was previously Associate Dean and Head of Education at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. Since 2012, he has been working as a freelance writer and education consultant. Tony has over 15 years’ experience teaching maths education and 10 years’ experience teaching mathematics in schools.

      Alice Hansen worked extensively in England and abroad as a primary school teacher, Principal Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education, author and consultant before becoming the director of Children Count Ltd, a highly successful educational consultancy business.

      Alison J. Price is a former Principal Lecturer in Primary Teacher Education at Oxford Brookes University, UK.

      This is a very good book which has a good grounding in theory, explains concepts clearly, has a wealth of practical ideas for EY settings and considers assessment. I think the Montague-Smith and Price book has the best balance of theory and practice for ITE programmes compared to the competition and would just benefit from a bit of updating.

      The book is very comprehensive and covers all areas of mathematics learning relevant to the early years. It is written in a clear academic style with an authoritative voice. The format of the book makes it easily accessible. I think the new edition could be enhanced by inclusion of examples, suggestions, opportunities for both practitioners and parents of how children’s interest in ICT could be incorporated into mathematical activities, particularly in light of ‘Computing’ being included in the current (2013) National Curriculum.

      There is a good balance of theory and practical. The illustrations really help to bring to concepts to life and set the book within the context of everyday practice, which is key to this being a well-received book within settings. Yes, I have read through all chapters and I feel that the book would benefit from being updated so that it reflects the current national context. Since this version of the book was written, much has changed within the national context in terms of mathematics, which has had a bearing on the practice of maths. Yes, definitely [to publish] – I think this is a really valuable text and would really benefit from an updated version as above.
