It was assumed that readers interested in development would have had some knowledge of the general concepts of psychology and psychoanalysis, given the prominence of discoveries in these fields over the previous ten to twenty years. It starts with some history of the adolescent girl, including their representation in literature and goes on to cover issues such as physical changes, as well as psychological and emotional expectations. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
