Biography

Jonathan Annand has been animating since he was very little, when he would make flip books from the overrun cardstock his father would bring home from work.

He began his career in animation as a messenger for The Ink Tank in NYC, and has since worked for J.J. Sedelmaier Productions, Walt Disney Feature Animation (where he was an animator on characters including Stitch from Lilo and Stitch and Kenai Bear from Brother Bear) and Electronic Arts (where as a senior animator, he created the non-gameplay cut scenes for Madden Football).

He is currently a principal animator at Iron Galaxy Studios (animating on Rumbleverse and Killer Instinct, among others), and an adjunct instructor at the University of Central Florida’s graduate gaming school, Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA).

"This is a how-to book on character animation that offers something new. It bridges the lingo gap between hand-drawn and digital animation, translating the familiar vocabulary of basic personality animation principles into digital terminology. 600 illustrations demonstrate his points clearly, as do numerous links that reference classical animation. Jonathan Annand holds a deep respect for, and knowledge of, animation history, which he brings to this excellent book. Highly recommended."

John Canemaker, independent animator, animation historian, author, teacher and lecturer.

"This terrific volume not only combines helpful and inspiring instruction for animators of all ages, but is also a marvelous background history of the animation industry and its key players through the years. It’s chock full of reference of all kinds and gives the reader a solid foundation of what animation is all about as art and filmmaking. This is a manual for the 21st Century!"

J. J. Sedelmaier, animator, illustrator, designer, author and film director/producer.
