Biography
Daniyal Shakeel is a legal, academic, and professional practice specialist with extensive experience spanning higher education, legal practice, financial services, and leadership within the built environment sector. He currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Real Estate at the University of Westminster’s School of Applied Management, where he is also the Course Leader for the RICS-accredited Level 6 Chartered Surveyor (Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management) Apprenticeship Programme and EDI Lead for the School. His academic leadership focuses on curriculum innovation, practice-based learning, authentic assessment design, inclusive pedagogy, and professional alignment with industry standards. Shakeel leads and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate modules. His teaching philosophy centres on bridging legal doctrine with professional application, preparing students for careers as Chartered Surveyors, Commercial Managers, property professionals, and legal practitioners. Alongside academia, he serves as Executive Director at SMB Solicitors and practises as a Chartered Legal Executive (FCILEx) and CILEX Conveyancing Practitioner, specialising in residential and commercial conveyancing, landlord and tenant matters, property litigation, contract law, and complex real estate disputes. He also holds the status of an unregistered barrister and brings a strong advocacy and litigation perspective to both legal practice and professional education. Shakeel also contributes voluntarily to professional legal education through teaching ethics and litigation practice to aspiring barristers at the Royal Society of Lincoln's Inn, supporting the development of advocacy standards, professional responsibility, and ethical practice within the legal profession. He holds a PhD in Property and Consumer Law from Brunel University London, an LLM, an MBA, a Licensed Conveyancer qualification, and professional financial certifications, including Dip CeMAP®, CeRER. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI), and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (FCILEx). His recent academic contribution includes publication in the Asian Human Rights Book of the Year 2026, reflecting his work on legal ethics, governance, and human rights within professional and commercial contexts. He has also presented his research internationally, including at the European Real Estate Society (ERES), contributing to scholarly discussion on real estate law, sustainability, and professional practice within the global property sector.
