Critical Debates in Global Late Antiquity

About the Book Series

The series presents critical surveys of key debates in Late Antique studies (c. 250 CE – c. 800 CE), a discipline defined by its transcultural focus on the peoples, polities, cultures and religions of Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Caucasus, and West, Central and East Asia. Books in the series present overviews of controversial topics in Late Antique studies and provide incisive, analytical discussions of the themes and issues which have shaped the historical study of Late Antiquity and indeed continue to influence the study of the period into the present day. Individual volumes offer critical evaluations of established and emergent debates in the field. They examine the intellectual foundations of a given topic – the origins and historical orientation of a debate – along with analysing cutting edge ideas and current trends shaping its contemporary formulation. All volumes present integrated interpretations of their topics across the established and emergent empires and polities of late antique Eurasia and Africa by offering transcultural and transhistorical assessments – a global perspective – thus seeking to move beyond the traditional confines of a Romano-centric post-classical world.
