Cultural Studies Volume 8, Issue 1

Edited By Lawrence Grossberg, Janice Radway Copyright 1994

Environmental matters are among the most pressing issues challenging the world today. Besides being of utmost importance in terms of survival, environmental matters are popular; they are shaped and worked out in differential relations of knowledge and power; they invite analyses of their representations and the role of representation; and they are theoretically interesting. It is not surprising then that cultural theorists have in this issue of Cultural Studies turned their attention to matters of the environment. Jennifer Daryl Slack and Jody Berland have brought together a variety of contributions (including 2 book reviews) for a special section on the environment in order to highlight cultural studies unique potential to enhance understanding of environmental matters and to suggest its applicability as a theoretical basis for environmental activism. In addition to the special section the environment, this issue of Cultural Studies includes two articles that continue and further central debates in cultural studies: the role of the reception of media in Postcolonial societies. Cultural Studies is available both on annual subscription and from bookstores.
