Biography
Alan J. Lutenegger is an Emeritus Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst where he has been on the faculty since 1989. He received his B.S. degree in Construction Engineering in 1975 from Iowa State University and his M.S. (1977) and Ph.D. (1979) degrees in Geotechnical Engineering, also from Iowa State University. He is a registered professional engineer and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has authored or coauthored over 170 technical papers related to Geotechnical Engineering and advised 53 graduate students in his 36 years as a faculty member.
He is the author of Soils and Geotechnology in Construction, In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering and Laboratory Manual for Geotechnical Characterization of Fine-Grained Soils, published by CRC Press. Over the past 20 years, his research work has largely focused on the design and behavior of Helical Anchors and Piles. He has been involved with the design, installation and testing of helical anchors and piles and has performed or supervised over 800 full-scale field load tests. He recently completed Design, Installation and Applications of Helical Anchors and Piles in press by Taylor & Francis, Publishers.
