Biography

Larry Stalley served the Church as a teaching pastor for 44 years. He writes this book as a Bible exegete and theologian, providing in-depth exegeses of Biblical statements that have puzzled students of the New Testament for centuries. He welcomes opportunities to speak on the Shroud at church gatherings, retreats, and conferences. He can be contacted through his website: www.theincredibleshroud.com.

The apparent lack of references to a cloth bearing the image of Jesus in the New Testament is often cited as a reason for rejecting the authenticity of the Turin Shroud.  However, Larry Stalley’s insightful and in-depth research has uncovered cryptic references to the Shroud hidden within passages of the Bible by early Christian writers.  He describes and explains his research findings in detail and skillfully constructs a persuasive body of evidence that the existence of the Shroud is documented in the New Testament texts.

I am often asked why there are not any references to the Shroud of Turin, Jesus’ burial cloth, in the Bible.  But there are.  Stalley in Divine Testimony has found all of them.  They are indirect but are there if you understand Christian history, the persecution of the early Christians, and the messages New Testament writers gave us.  Read this book and find them!  As Pope John Paul II said, ‘The Shroud is a mirror of the Gospel,’ and Stalley’s book brings the Gospels and the Shroud into fine focus.

As the host of the Real Seekers podcast, I have had the honor of having some of the top Biblical scholars in the world on my program; scholars such as Gary Habermas, Mike Licona, Ben Witherington, and Craig Blomberg, just to name but a few.  Furthermore, I have also been privy to the top experts on the Shroud of Turin.  I can attest that Larry Stalley presents, by far, the best case for there being some cryptic mentions of the images on the Shroud of Turin in the pages of the Bible itself.  His mastery over the original Greek is matched only by his rather innovative arguments that help to provide a strongly needed breath of fresh air on some of the toughest Biblical interpretational puzzles in the New Testament.

Speaking as someone who has been and remains somewhat skeptical of some of Stalley’s claims, he has managed to cause me to question some of the more standard explanations of these important and mysterious Biblical texts and has even managed to change my mind on an occasion or two.  This book is simply a must-read for anyone interested in New Testament studies and/or the Shroud of Turin!

“Thanks to Larry Stalley's amazing research, it is now possible to learn more about how the early members who witnessed the image on the burial cloth actually considered and understood its significance.

Larry Stalley has very important strengths that make his book Divine Testimony the treasure that it is.  He is analytical; he has a firm grasp of the Greek language so as to provide excellent exegesis of important Biblical passages; he is a powerful advocate; and he is a compelling communicator and teacher who knows how to humanize the messages that he seeks to spread.  His book is an enjoyable and enlightening ‘must-read’ for Christians and skeptics, alike!

Noted sindonologist Larry Stalley has produced a much-needed work that fills in the gap in previous research on the Shroud of Turin.  Much has been written about the scientific evidence for and against the famous archaeological artifact allegedly linked to Jesus Christ, but the question remains, ‘Why is there a relative absence of recorded history on its prevalence prior to its appearance in Lirey, France, in 1356?’ The author answers that question by marshaling in a rather convincing array of evidence that is consistent with the motif of secrecy or cryptic messaging that was typical of writings in the early church.  His arguments are very persuasive and thought-provoking, spurring me to rush back to reread scriptures and compare references.  By and large, I think, ‘He’s got it!’

It has been well-demonstrated that Jesus’ imaged burial cloth, having been preserved by his disciples, was referenced, albeit cryptically, in various writings and inscriptions of the persecuted early Church. In this book, Larry Stalley has employed his exceptional skills in scriptural exegesis to explain the important role played by the Shroud of Turin in fulfilling prophecy, in assisting in evangelization, and in strengthening faith, and I would highly recommend it as a very fine, and much-needed, contribution to the study of this famous relic.

The documentation of facts is superb.  There are 457 entries in the bibliography and some 1,300 footnotes!  His book is destined be an indispensable source in sindonology, especially for numerous scholars in biblical exegesis. However, one does not have to be a scholar to be able to understand and benefit from this work.
