Biography

E. Russell (Russ) Ritenour completed a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Virginia in 1980.

His dissertation work involved theoretical and experimental studies in radiation dosimetry and

the design of radiation therapy dose and fractionation schemes for combined

radiotherapy/chemotherapy in solid tumors. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship in

Medical Physics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences center, he stayed on the faculty as

Director of Graduate Studies in Medical Physics until moving to the University of Minnesota in

1989 where he was Professor and Chief of Physics in the Department of Radiology, Medical

School, and Director of Graduate Studies in Biophysical Sciences and Medical Physics in the

Graduate School for twenty-five years. Since 2014, he has been a Professor of Medical Physics in

the Department of Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina  and has been given the honorific title of Emeritus beginning July 2026.

He has been a consultant to the U.S. Army for resident physics training and has served the

American Board of Radiology in various capacities since 1986 including membership in oral and

written exam committees and as Chair of the Physics Committee for the physics section of the

radiology resident’s exam. He also served as Imaging Physics Editor of the journals

Radiographics and The American Journal of Roentgenography. He has been a Board Member

and Treasurer of the Radiological Society of North America Research and Education Foundation,

and a Board Member of the International Organization of Medical Physics. Dr. Ritenour is

certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiation Therapy and Diagnostic Radiologic

Medical Physics. He is a Fellow and Past President of the American Association of Physicists in

Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.

 

Dr. Sameer Tipnis is currently a Professor of Radiology & Chief of Medical Physics in the Dept. of Radiology and

Radiological Science at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He received his PhD in Physics

from The University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1996. Thereafter, he worked in a research and

development firm for 7 years focusing on developing high-speed x-ray imaging systems and scintillators

for x-ray and gamma-ray imaging.

At MUSC, he provides guidance on optimizing imaging protocols in CT, Nuclear Medicine, and radiation

safety. He teaches radiology residents, cardiology fellows and medical students about physics of

radiological imaging and ionizing radiation. During his time at MUSC, Dr. Tipnis has served as the

Radiation Safety Officer for 7 years, overseeing the radiation safety program for the hospital and the

University. Dr. Tipnis is board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Medical

Physics and Nuclear Medical Physics. Dr. Tipnis is a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in

Medicine (AAPM) and chairs the task group TG361 on the recommended use and management of

protective garments. He is a member of 3 other sub-committees for radiation protection, radiology

resident curriculum, and cardiology fellow’s curriculum.

Dr. Tipnis serves on the Board of Trustees of the ABR as the trustee for Diagnostic Medical Physics, and

as an oral examiner for ABR’s Diagnostic and Nuclear Medicine certifying exams. He is currently a co-

Editor-in-Chief of Medical Physics International, a publication of the IOMP, section editor for radiology

physics for Contemporary Diagnostic Radiology and a member of the editorial board for the

Encyclopedia of Medical Physics. He is a faculty member at the biennially organized College on Medical

Physics, at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. Dr. Tipnis has published over 50

peer-reviewed research articles related to radiation exposure, techniques in radiological imaging, and

the development of scintillators.
