'In this timely and meticulously researched volume, Zdeněk Rod illuminates the practical dilemmas at the heart of the security–development nexus. His comparative analysis of Provincial Reconstruction Teams demonstrates how national priorities, threat environments, and institutional cultures shaped divergent approaches in Afghanistan. The book offers valuable lessons for future stabilisation and counter-insurgency missions. It will be essential reading for scholars and practitioners concerned with the design of effective civil–military strategies.'

Balázs Tárnok, Director of Research, John Lukacs Institute for Strategy and Politics, Ludovika University of Public Service, Budapest

'Zdeněk Rod’s Examining the Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan is a compelling and intellectually ambitious study that makes a powerful case for a hybrid, adaptable, and carefully balanced approach between securitisation and development. Rather than privileging one dimension over the other, Rod demonstrates that sustainable stabilisation depends on continuous recalibration between security imperatives and developmental goals. His nuanced comparative analysis of fourteen PRTs persuasively shows that rigid, one-sided strategies fail, while flexible, context-sensitive models offer the most credible path forward in conflict environments.'

Nicolas Jouan, Senior Analyst, RAND Europe office

''Provincial Reconstruction Teams (in Afghanistan) were to the security–development nexus what light bulbs were to electricity: the practice that illuminated the theory. Zdeněk Rod’s book is an excellent and holistic exploration of this practice.  Through an in-depth analysis of the involvement of fourteen countries, including smaller ones, whose experiences have been largely absent from scholarly attention, Rod reveals the enduring relevance and conceptual limitations of linking security and development in the context of contemporary conflicts. It is a masterful synthesis of strategy, theory, and practical implementation on the ground.’'

Jiří Baloun, Lieutenant General (ret.) and Former Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Afghanistan

'Zdeněk Rod makes a rigorous, original and highly valuable contribution to the study of the security–development nexus by providing one of the most comprehensive empirical examinations of Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan to date. The book's systematic inclusion of smaller NATO contributors, whose experiences are often overlooked, is particularly commendable, thereby enriching both scholarly and policy understanding. The study's core conclusion—that the implementation of the security–development nexus is inherently context-dependent and often deviates from both theory and planning—is both persuasive and highly pertinent for current security and peacebuilding discussions. Overall, this is a nuanced, well-structured and policy-relevant study that will serve as an essential reference for academics, practitioners and decision-makers engaged in international security, development and civil–military cooperation.'
