Failures of Mechanical Components and Structures

312 Pages 378 B/W Illustrations
by CRC Press

This book presents the mechanisms by which failures occur in mechanical components and structures within a scientific framework. It examines mechanical failures and corrosion-related degradation, providing both theoretical background and real industrial case studies. The book also covers human factors in failure initiation and evolution, highlighting the importance of safety culture and... Read more

Biography

Gregory N. Haidemenopoulos is Professor of Physical Metallurgy and Director of the Laboratory of Materials at the University of Thessaly, Greece. His research focuses on computational alloy thermodynamics and kinetics with applications in alloy design and hydrogen embrittlement. He serves on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Materials, and the Welding International; and has provided extensive consulting services to industry in failure analysis and materials selection. He has also served as an expert for the European Commission's RFCS and HORIZON research programs and has supervised numerous PhD students throughout his career. He received his PhD in Metallurgy, MSc in Metallurgy, and MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from MIT.

Anna D. Zervaki is Assistant Professor in Metallic Materials and Welding Technology at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Her research focuses on welding processes, metallic materials for hydrogen storage, computational alloy thermodynamics, corrosion behavior, and failure mechanisms of mechanical components. In addition to teaching and research, she has provided consulting services in failure analysis and materials selection. Her work has been supported by the European Union and the GSRT (Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology). She has co-authored more than 90 papers in international journals and contributed to over 400 industry-funded failure analysis reports. She served as President (2022–2023) of the Federation of European Materials Societies.
