Biography

About the author
Mary H. Dudley, MD, MSN is the former Chief Medical Examiner for Jackson County in Kansas City, MO. She also served as the Chief Medical Examiner, Director of Forensic Science Laboratories, and District Coroner for Sedgwick County in Wichita, Kansas, as well as Medical Examiner for Maricopa County in Phoenix, AZ. She is board certified in anatomic and forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. She completed pathology residency at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO and fellowship in forensic pathology at the University of New Mexico. She founded the first Forensic Nursing Certificate Program in 1994 and originated the first Forensic Medical Investigation Course in 1996. Dr. Dudley is a fellow member of the National Association of Medical Examiners and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. She served as co-chair of the Medical Examiner Advisory Board for the Musculotissue Foundation, tissue Medical Director for Donor Network of Arizona, and member of the Missouri and Arizona Child Fatality Review Boards. As a member of the Disaster Mortuary Operations Response Team, she ran morgue operations during the deployment for Kirksville airplane crash in 2004, Hurricane Katrina and Rita in 2005, Hurricane Ike in 2008, and the Joplin tornado in 2011. She also held appointment as Program Director of the Forensic Pathology Fellowship program in Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology at the University of Missouri and University of Kansas. Dr. Dudley was the recipient of the CRC Press/Taylor Francis Group Lifetime Achievement and Author Appreciation Award presented at the 2020 American Academy of Forensic Sciences meeting.

Lauren E. Dvorscak, MD has served as the Deputy Chief Medical Investigator at the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) for the State of New Mexico since 2020. She completed her medical education at Indiana University School of Medicine, in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2011. She then completed a pathology residency at the University of New Mexico Hospitals, Albuquerque, New Mexico and forensic pathology fellowship at OMI in 2016. She maintains board certifications in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. Dr. Dvorscak is active in field deputy medical investigator training at OMI, contributing to and serving on the panel for project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) for medicolegal death investigators. She is also the Program Director for the Forensic Pathology Fellowship at OMI, and autopsy rotation director for the pathology residents. She maintains memberships with the National Association of Medical Examiners and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
