by CRC Press

The New Austrian Tunneling Method, or Sequential Excavation Method, is applicable for soft ground mixed face tunnels in urban environments, caverns, adits, bifurcations and shallow tunnels where it is not always practical or economical to use a tunnel boring machine or conventional excavation methods. This reference book on construction is for beginning tunnel design and construction engineers and... Read more

Biography

Gerhard Sauer, founder and principal of the Dr. Sauer Group was an early advocate of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) and was involved in its first application in soft ground in an urban environment (Frankfurt, 1970). He introduced NATM inclusive of tunnel waterproofing to the North American tunnel market in Washington DC as a consultant to Ilbau in the early 1980s. The design of the Wheaton Station, part of Washington DC’s metro system, was the first using the new membrane-type waterproofing system in North America.

David R. Klug is President of David R. Klug and Associates, Inc, and Klug Construction Systems, LLC. He is the Past Chairman of the Underground Construction Association of the SME and currently serves on various UCA committees. He has 48 years of tunnel industry involvement in the supply of NATM/SEM and Precast Segmental Tunnel Lining componentry and systems.

Franz Wilhelmstoetter is the President and Managing Director of Dr. Sauer & Partners’ US subsidiary and has more than 15 years of industry experience in the design and construction of all diameter SEM/NATM and TBM tunnels in rock and soft ground conditions. He is an active member of the tunnelling and underground construction industry and serves on various ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) and UCA (Underground Construction Association) committees.

Juergen Laubbichler is the Managing Director of the Dr. Sauer Group and has more than twenty years of experience in the tunneling industry. He is responsible for managing tunnel projects involving geotechnical investigations, tunnel design, finite element analyses, waterproofing systems, tunnel rehabilitation, fire-life-safety, and electrical and mechanical components. Additional fields of his responsibility are providing design support services during construction, risk management and construction management services.

Norbert Fuegenschuh graduated from the University of Technology in Graz, Austria with a masters degree in Civil Engineering. He joined Beton- und Monierbau, today BeMo Tunnelling (short BeMo), located in Innsbruck, Austria in 1990. Norbert has a total of 36+ years of international experience in SEM/ NATM tunneling, incl shotcreting works for tunnel primary and secondary linings. Based in Northern Virginia, he works as BeMo`s representative in North America. He is a member of UCA of SME, the Tunneling Association of Canada, DFI`s Underground Committee and he also represents Austria in the International Committee of the RETC.
