Biography

Manish Roy graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1985 in Metallurgical Engineering. After a short stay with an integrated steel plant where he was involved in production, planning and control of steel in 300T LD converters as ‘Junior Manager’, he joined for his post-graduation study. Following post-graduation, he joined ‘Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL)’ in 1989 as scientist. After retiring from DMRL in 2024, he joined National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, as ‘Professor of Practice’. His areas of research interest are materials and surface engineering for protection against degradation such as tribology, corrosion, tribo-corrosion, nano-tribology etc. For last one decade, he is working on indigenous production and certification of aeronautical grade bearing steels and high strength plate steels for underwater vessels. He is also working on failure analysis of various aero-engine and naval components. Meanwhile, he has visited University of Strathclyde under bilateral exchange programme of ‘Indian National Science Academy’ and ‘Royal Society (London)’ in 2001. He visited Vienna University of Technology with ‘Lise Meitner International Position’ of Austrian Science Fund (FWF) during 2001 to 2003. He has also visited ‘Austrian Center of Competence for Tribology’ with ‘Sr. Marie Curie Position’ of ‘European Commission’ in 2007 to 2009. Dr. Roy has more than 125 papers in various reviewed national and international journals. He is edited two books on ‘Surface Engineering for Enhanced Performance against Wear’ (Springer) and ‘Thermal Sprayed Coatings and Their Tribological Performances’ (IGI Global). He has been guest editors of several special issues of several international journals. He is in the editorial board of ‘International Journal of Refractory Metal and Hard Materials’, ‘Recent Patent in Mechanical Engineering’ (till July-13), ‘International Journal of Manufacturing, Materials and Mechanical Engineering’, ‘International Journal of Bio and Tribo-Corrosion’, ‘International Journal of Surface Engineering and Interdisciplinary Materials Science’ and ‘Defence Science Journal’. Dr. Roy has organised several international symposiums in India and abroad. Dr. Roy was convener for the 1st and 2nd international conference on ‘Tribo-Corrosion’ held in India and Austria respectively and 1st Indo Austrian Symposium on ‘Materials Engineering’ held in India. He has organised 2nd and 3rd Indo Austrian Symposiums on ‘Advances in Materials Engineering’ as co-chairperson and chairperson, in Austria and in India. He is in the international advisory board of 3rd, and 4th International conference on ‘Tribo-Corrosion’ held in Atlanta (USA) and Glasgow (UK), and ‘18th Plansee Seminar an international conference on Refractory Metals and Hard Materials’ held in Reutte, Austria. He organised 5th and 6th International Symposium on Tribo-Corrosion in India as co-chairperson and member of ‘International Advisory Board’. He has organised several CEP courses and short-term courses.
