Biography
Professor Sam Zhang Shanyong, better known as Sam Zhang, received his Ph.D. in ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991, and is a tenured full professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. Professor Zhang serves as editor-in-chief for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters and principal editor for Journal of Materials Research (United States). He has been involved in processing and characterization of nanocomposite thin films and coatings for 20 years and has authored or coauthored more than 250 peer-reviewed international journal papers, 8 books, and 20 book chapters, and has guest edited more than 20 journal volumes. His book Materials Characterization Techniques (CRC Press 2008) has been adopted as a textbook by several universities. Other CRC Press books include:
- Handbook of Nanostructured Thin Films and Coatings, Three-Volume Set (2010)
- Biological and Biomedical Coatings Handbook, Two-Volume Set (2011)
- Aerospace Materials Handbook (2012)

"This is a well-written book containing important up-to-date information pertaining to the fabrication, properties, and applications of hydroxyapatite coatings. I highly recommend this book to engineers and researchers working in the field, particularly graduate students."
—Paul K. Chu, City University of Hong Kong"Hydroxyapatile is indeed one of the important materials in biology, medical, and clinical studies. Of course, coating of this important material is a central issue in its application. This book nicely picks up important subjects in the corresponding field and comfortably organizes chapters with important contents."
—Katsuhiko Ariga, NIMS International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), Japan
