IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series

About the Series

IHE Delft PhD programme leads to a deepening of a field of specialisation. PhD fellows do scientific research, often with conclusions that directly influence their region. At IHE Delft, PhD researchers from around the world participate in problem-focused and solution-oriented research on development issues, resulting in an inspiring research environment. PhD fellows work together with other researchers from many countries dealing with topics related to water and the environment.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

IHE Delft PhD degrees are awarded jointly with a university. The degrees are highly valued and fully recognised in all parts of the world.

Opportunistic Adaptation Using the Urban Renewal Cycle to Adapt to Climate Change

Opportunistic Adaptation: Using the Urban Renewal Cycle to Adapt to Climate Change

1st Edition

By Polpat Nilubon
June 15, 2021

Urban climate adaptation currently focusses mainly on hazards but often ignores opportunities which arise in both space and time. Opportunistic Adaptation provides a rationalized approach to mainstream measures for climate adaptation into urban renewal cycles. Adaptation opportunities are ...

Water Loss Assessment in Distribution Networks Methods, Applications and Implications in Intermittent Supply

Water Loss Assessment in Distribution Networks: Methods, Applications and Implications in Intermittent Supply

1st Edition

By Taha M. Al-Washali
June 08, 2021

Water utilities worldwide lose 128 billion cubic meters annually, causing annual monetary losses estimated at USD 40 billion. Most of these losses occur in developing countries (74%). This calls for rethinking the challenges facing water utilities in developing countries, foremost of which is the ...

Off-Site Enhanced Biogas Production with Concomitant Pathogen Removal from Faecal Matter

Off-Site Enhanced Biogas Production with Concomitant Pathogen Removal from Faecal Matter

1st Edition

By Joy Nyawira Riungu
April 27, 2021

Globally, 2.7 billion people are using onsite sanitation systems, particularly in low income, high density settlements (LIHDS) in urban areas of developing countries. However, treatment technologies to manage the faecal sludge (FS) generated from these systems are often not in place, leading to ...

Assessment of the Fate of Surrogates for Enteric Pathogens Resulting From the Surcharging of Combined Sewer Systems

Assessment of the Fate of Surrogates for Enteric Pathogens Resulting From the Surcharging of Combined Sewer Systems

1st Edition

By Iosif Marios Scoullos
June 15, 2020

In the last ten years (2009-2019), flooding caused the death of over 48,000 people, and affected over 697 million people globally. This is expected to increase as a result of climate change, population growth and urbanisation. Floods can cause infections due to the release of water-borne pathogens ...

Climate Change and Development Impacts on Groundwater Resources in the Nile Delta Aquifer, Egypt

Climate Change and Development Impacts on Groundwater Resources in the Nile Delta Aquifer, Egypt

1st Edition

By Marmar Badr Mohamed Ahmed
December 25, 2020

Climate change is likely to continue to have severe impacts, including sea level rise. At the same time, population increase and development imperatives create additional pressure on available water resources. These changes are problematic for the Mediterranean coastal areas and especially the Nile...

Community-Based Monitoring Initiatives of Water and Environment: Evaluation of Establishment Dynamics and Results

Community-Based Monitoring Initiatives of Water and Environment: Evaluation of Establishment Dynamics and Results

1st Edition

By Mohammad Gharesifard
November 16, 2020

Citizen participation in water and environmental management via community-based monitoring (CBM) has been praised for the potential to facilitate better informed, more inclusive, transparent, and representative decision making. Effectiveness of Bank Filtration for Water Supply in Arid Climates

Effectiveness of Bank Filtration for Water Supply in Arid Climates

1st Edition

By Ahmed Ragab Abdelrady Mahmoud
December 29, 2020

In many developing countries, water demand is increasing while surface- and groundwater resources are threatened by pollution and overexploitation. Hence, a more sustainable approach to water resources management and water treatment is required. In this capacity, bank filtration is a natural ...

Land Degradation in the Dinder and Rahad Basins Interactions Between Hydrology, Morphology and Ecohydrology in the Dinder National Park, Sudan

Land Degradation in the Dinder and Rahad Basins: Interactions Between Hydrology, Morphology and Ecohydrology in the Dinder National Park, Sudan

1st Edition

By Khalid Elnoor Ali Hassaballah
December 28, 2020

The spatial and temporal variability of the hydro-climate as well as land use and land cover (LULC) changes are among the most challenging problems facing water resources management. Understanding the interaction between climate variability, land use and land cover changes and their links to ...

Modelling Human-Flood Interactions A Coupled Flood-Agent-Institution Modelling Framework for Long-Term Flood Risk Management

Modelling Human-Flood Interactions: A Coupled Flood-Agent-Institution Modelling Framework for Long-Term Flood Risk Management

1st Edition

By Yared Abayneh Abebe
January 21, 2021

The negative impacts of floods are attributed to the extent and magnitude of a flood hazard, and the vulnerability and exposure of natural and human elements. In flood risk management (FRM) studies, it is crucial to model the interaction between human and flood subsystems across multiple spatial, ...
