Douglas P. Pflug is a nationally recognized speaker, author, leadership coach, and PTSD survivor who has dedicated his life to developing resilient leaders and trauma-informed workplaces. With over three decades of experience in policing, elite athletic coaching, and mental health advocacy, Doug brings a powerful blend of wisdom, storytelling, and street-smart insight to every stage he steps on.

He has trained over 10,000 leaders—from frontline emergency workers to corporate executives—delivering keynote speeches, executive coaching, and leadership development workshops across North America.

Doug served 28 years as a decorated Sergeant with the Guelph Police Service, followed by 7 years at the Ontario Police College as the Provincial Leadership Program Coordinator. He’s a dual-sport varsity athlete, founder of IRONWILL 360° Strength & Conditioning, and the driving force behind Canada’s Special Olympics floor hockey dynasty. His books are used in classrooms, training centers, boardrooms—and bedrooms of those trying to find the will to fight one more day.

The book study is generally evaluated positively and makes a significant contribution, particularly by revealing ways to cope with the various challenges individuals may encounter in their lives beyond theoretical frameworks.

The inclusion of case studies supports this approach and helps the reader to better understand the material. Although the number of chapters is high, the study offers a balanced perspective due to its fluidity.

What truly distinguishes this book study from others and amplifies its effectiveness is the incorporation of compelling case studies alongside a diverse range of leader profile examples. The author's insightful technical information and guidance not only reinforce each case but also deliver powerful insights that significantly enrich the learning experience. This approach ensures that readers gain practical and applicable knowledge that can elevate their understanding and leadership skills.

I appreciate his unique approaches in his book studies, as well as his style, which surprises and intrigues the reader while directly connecting with their life and emotions.

I encourage readers to engage with this book, considering its impact both before and after reading it.

Douglas P. Pflug’s A Blueprint for Level 5 Unicorn Leadership is a transformative guide to achieving the pinnacle of leadership, blending humility, resilience, and visionary thinking with actionable strategies for personal and organizational success. Pflug introduces the concept of “Level 5 Unicorn Leadership,” which expands on Jim Collins’ framework of Level 5 Leadership.

This style of leadership not only prioritizes professional will and personal humility but also incorporates emotional intelligence, inclusivity, and a purpose-driven ethos to inspire innovation and collaboration. The book is rich with practical tools, reflective exercises, and case studies that make it a comprehensive roadmap for leaders seeking to elevate their impact.

What sets this book apart is its ability to balance theoretical insights with firsthand application. Pflug’s anecdotes and experiences as a law enforcement leader and mentor lend authenticity to his message, while his clear structure allows readers to methodically develop traits like integrity, adaptability, and empathy.

The inclusion of diverse leadership examples—from Abraham Lincoln to Satya Nadella—underscores the universal applicability of the principles outlined in the book. For leaders at any stage of their journey, this work serves as both an inspiration and a challenge to rise beyond traditional models of leadership and leave a lasting legacy.

This book was a powerful and thought-provoking read that challenged many of my preconceptions about leadership.

Doug did an exceptional job of making the concepts relatable, regardless of career stage, ensuring that both emerging and seasoned leaders could find value.

The book emphasized the importance of influence at all levels—leading up, across, and down—rather than relying solely on positional authority. His insights pushed me to rethink how leadership is not just about directing others but about fostering collaboration and accountability at every level.

The practical examples and actionable strategies made the book both engaging and applicable. Overall, it’s a must-read for anyone looking to enhance their leadership impact from wherever they stand in an organization.

When Doug asked me to dive into Ironwill 360° Leadership: A Blueprint for Level 5 Unicorn Leadership, I said yes—but honestly, I worried it might be just another run-of-the-mill leadership book. Boy was I wrong! Doug takes the fundamentals of leadership—even the ones we all think we know—and gives them a refreshing twist. This book is more than just a read—it’s an eye-opener. It’s packed with valuable insights that have already got me reflecting on my own leadership approach. I can’t wait to implement some of these ideas and make meaningful changes for the better. During my career in the financial world, I had the opportunity to work for a number of leaders, some good and some not so good. Good leaders are built through self development and continuous learning, as well as adaptability to ever changing landscapes.

Some leaders are promoted to a leadership role simply because they were good at the previous role that held. They either adapt to leadership and start the journey to self realization and growth, or they continue to do what they did before the promotion. The first group will embrace the skills in this book and embark on a career to become better leaders. The second group have been promoted to their level of incompetence, and will wreak havoc on previously well managed teams.

Doug has spent his life in continuous growth and adaptation and has honed his leadership skills to a razors edge. He shares his skills and knowledge willingly and strives to help people become the best version of themselves.

I count Doug among my most cherished friends and enjoy being around his positive attitude. He has taught me much on how to become a better me.

In this book, he shares many of the traits and skills he has developed over a lifetime of learning and growth. His life experiences and skills have strategically positioned him to provide guidance on becoming a Level 5 Unicorn Leader.

The skills in this book will help established leaders grow in their leadership journey, and new leaders to establish the solid base needed to get their journey going.

Each of Doug's books provides a stepping stone to provide the reader with the knowledge required to get to Level 5 leadership. Well worth the read if you are intent on becoming the best version of a leader that you can be.

What I liked most is how clearly the book shows that leadership is about people, not position. The focus on humility, emotional intelligence, trust, and communication matches what I’ve seen in environments where teams actually thrive. The blend of strength and compassion in the Level 5 Unicorn Leader model makes sense to me, and the examples and case studies make it easy to picture what that looks like in real life rather than as a slogan.

I also enjoyed the way the book reinforces that leadership is earned through daily behavior, not through title. The stories make you stop and think about whether you are building people or just directing them. It is encouraging, practical, and honest about what great leadership requires, and that is what makes it valuable.

Douglas Pflug’s IRONWILL 360° Leadership is built around a familiar idea—Level 5 leadership—but he gives it a more operational, practitioner-oriented feel. Pflug's consistent emphasis on humility, emotional intelligence, and the discipline of developing others aligns with what many of us learn the hard way: leadership is less about individual brilliance and more about what and who you leave for those who remain.

The sections on leadership legacy are particularly strong. Pflug contends that leadership should be measured not by short-term wins but by long-term influence, such as how teams perform after you’re gone, how people grow because you invested in them, and whether your organization is stronger, not just busier. That message bears repeating.

The book distinguishes itself with its structured case studies. They follow a consistent pattern: facts and issues to analyze, tools to apply, and key steps to take. These alone make the volume more usable than most leadership books.

Consider the Jordan Malik case in the hybrid leadership chapter. Malik leads a split team struggling with fragmented communication, disengagement, and disjointed culture. Missed deadlines, remote employees feeling excluded, outdated collaboration tools, and uneven leadership visibility follow.

Pflug walks the reader through practical interventions: conducting an anonymous team assessment, auditing communication systems, and reframing hybrid work “not as a limitation but as an opportunity for innovation and collaboration.” That progression, from diagnosis to action, is exactly how leadership actually works in the field.

The same structure recurs across chapters: whether it’s turning around a failing division, rebuilding trust in a disengaged team, or navigating an ethical crisis, the leader is forced to confront ambiguity, apply a defined set of tools, and execute against clear next steps. That’s a useful discipline, especially for mid-level leaders who don’t have the luxury of theory.

I also appreciated the attention to leading in a hybrid world. This is not treated as a tactical problem (“Which platform do we use?”) but as a human one: how do you build trust, inclusion, and accountability when your team isn’t in the same room? The answer, in Pflug’s model, comes back to communication discipline, cultural intentionality, and leader accessibility. Technology has a role, but not an overriding one.

Finally, while the book includes profiles of well-known leaders, I found the underlying message more compelling: leadership is not reserved for the famous. It’s practiced every day by supervisors, mid-level managers, and frontline professionals, often in ambiguous, high-pressure environments where there is no script. That’s where leadership actually lives.

This is a practical, accessible book that will resonate most with people who are already in the arena, leading teams, making decisions, and trying to do it better tomorrow than they did today.

In a crowded leadership space filled with recycled theory and abstract frameworks, Douglas P Pflug delivers something refreshingly different—a battle-tested blueprint forged in real-world pressure.

#IRONWILL 360° Leadership: A Blueprint for Level 5 Unicorn Leadership is not just a book—it is a leadership operating system designed for those who refuse to settle for average. Drawing from decades of frontline policing, elite athletic coaching, and executive mentorship, Pflug introduces the concept of the Level 5 Unicorn Leader—a rare leader who blends professional will with personal humility, while integrating emotional intelligence, resilience, and purpose-driven action.

What sets this book apart is its practicality and authenticity. This is not theory for theory’s sake. Through structured frameworks, case studies, and actionable insights, Pflug equips leaders with tools to:

Build resilience in high-stakes environments
Lead with integrity and courage under pressure
Influence without relying on authority
Develop trust-based, high-performing teams

As highlighted in editorial reviews, the book stands out for its ability to move beyond conventional leadership models, offering a “convincing and practical manual” that emphasizes emotional intelligence, adaptability, and ethical leadership in today’s complex environment .

Another strength is Pflug’s human-centered approach to leadership. He reinforces a critical truth many leaders overlook: leadership is not about position—it’s about people. His emphasis on empathy, accountability, and daily behavior challenges readers to reflect deeply on whether they are truly developing others or simply directing them.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the book is its integration of lived experience with structured development. Pflug doesn’t just teach leadership—he has lived it in environments where failure has real consequences. That credibility resonates throughout every chapter.

This book is especially valuable for:

Military leaders preparing for command
Cybersecurity and tech professionals transitioning into leadership
Executives navigating complexity, change, and human dynamics

Final Verdict:
IRONWILL 360° Leadership is a powerful, no-nonsense guide for leaders who want to elevate from competent to exceptional. It challenges, equips, and ultimately calls the reader to lead with purpose, humility, and resilience.

□□ If you are serious about leadership—not the title, but the responsibility—this is a must-read.

IRONWILL 360° Leadership: A Blueprint for Level 5 Unicorn Leadership with Douglas P. Pflug is an informative and inspirational leadership book which succeeds in bringing together theory and practice. Having spent many years in law enforcement, coaching, mentoring, and developing leaders at the executive level, Pflug shares a practical approach he calls “Level 5 Unicorn Leadership” — a philosophy of leadership that is humble, resilient, emotionally intelligent, upright, and service oriented. The success of this book is in its authenticity – the lessons do not exist as abstract concepts but as lived experiences with stories, examples and practical leadership lessons.

A major strength of the book is its emphasis on 'people-centred leadership' in a world that is becoming more complex and rapidly changing. But real leadership isn't about titles, power, or authority, it's about empowering others, building trust, and cultivating cultures where people can thrive, Pflug says. His lessons on emotional intelligence, adaptability, making ethical choices, building a lasting legacy are of particular interest for today's leaders in business, public service, education, athletics, and community. The practical examples (SMART goals, mission-vision-values alignment, leadership development exercises) offer the reader with tools that can be used in their own organization and team immediately.

Another feature that makes this book stand out is its focus on the concepts of resilience, authenticity, and servant leadership. The personal anecdotes and reflections of Pflug, such as dealing with adversity and leadership challenges, enrich the content and add authenticity. He does not see leadership as being “perfect”, but as a journey of life-long learning, growth and self-awareness. His prose is captivating, inspiring, and easy to read, which is especially benefit to new leaders and those who have been in the executive ranks for some time and want to improve their own leadership style.

IRONWILL 360° Leadership: A Blueprint for Level 5 Unicorn Leadership is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to be more impactful, ethical and purpose driven. Douglas P. Pflug is not just a leader who gives leadership advice, he's a blueprint for building meaningful influence, and lasting organizational impact. This book is a leadership guide and a call to action for those who wish to lead with courage, humility and vision in today's changing world.

A powerful, timely, and inspiring leadership resource that challenges readers to rise above conventional leadership and create a lasting legacy through service, integrity, and authentic human connection.
