Biography

Caroline N. Walsh is an organizational consultant, a US Coast Guard veteran, former CIA analyst, and leadership expert with a PhD in Leadership Studies. Drawing from her unique career in national security and her academic research, she specializes in translating complex leadership and ethical challenges into engaging, accessible insights. She is the author of Fairly Smooth Operator: My Life Occasionally at the Tip of the Spear, a well-received memoir that blends humor with hard-earned lessons from the intelligence world.

"Written during a period of profound change due to the introduction of AI, Leadership and Morality finds a crucial balance between critical thinking, human-centered decision making, and identifying the “ethical good” in times of extreme disruption and compound volatility. And it does so with a healthy sense of humor that makes the read more engaging and fun."

Paul FalconeAuthor, Workplace Ethics: Mastering Ethical Leadership and Sustaining a Morale Workplace (HarperCollins Leadership and the American Management Association)

"This book is an exploration of the survival of ethics when tested by absolute authority and moral ambiguity. It offers a fresh take on the age-old debate: does society need ethical people or ethical institutions? Leadership and Morality exposes the fragility of ethical institutions under unethical leaders in a democracy derived of, by, and for the same people."

Gina Bennett, Retired CIA, Senior Analytic Service and Adjunct Professor Georgetown Security Studies.

"Caroline’s Leadership and Morality is a timely and deeply thoughtful exploration of what it means to lead when the “right” answer is unclear. This book is essential reading for leaders, professionals, and emerging decision-makers who want to navigate ethical complexity with clarity, maturity, and integrity rather than false certainty."

Sheri NasimPresident and CEO of Center for Executive Excellence, Author of Work on Purpose: How to Connect with Who You Are and What You Do

"Leadership and Morality, engagingly written insight into what must be one of the least known and most challenging organizational environments in the world. In addressing issues from murderous informants to workplace adultery, Walsh develops practical advice for professionals wishing to strive to advance human dignity in their own, perhaps less challenging, workplaces."

Dr. Aidan McQuadeWriter and Independent Human Rights Consultant

"Leadership and Morality in Ethical Ambiguity is a keenly compelling journey that captures unique and compelling leadership stories and provides a unique peek into the most secretive and misunderstood institution in U.S. history, the Central Intelligence Agency. Kudos to this author and former CIA colleague for her thought-provoking, truth-seeking depiction of leadership challenges at the CIA."

Darrell BlockerRetired CIA officer, Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient, Founder, DMB Consulting Services

"Leadership and Morality in Ethical Ambiguity is foundational and much needed resource for anyone dealing with the challenging complexities of the modern landscape. Caroline’s work is unique and an indispensable guide for those who recognize that engaging others with human dignity is not just a moral imperative, but a tangible competitive advantage for achieving success."
