    This book examines the concept of neighbourhood over space and time and understands how neighbourhoods can impact human health and well-being. It discusses the identification of neighbourhood boundaries, features of individual neighbourhoods, and the concept of neighbourhood in some major world as well as Indian cities. Based on extensive research, this study refers to both primary as well as secondary sources of data using various statistical and geo-spatial techniques. The first section of the book focuses on the concept of neighbourhood, concept of neighbourhood unit, methods used in the identification of neighbourhood boundaries and theories related to neighbourhood effects on health. The subsequent section of the book deals with a case study on neighbourhood effects on health in an Indian city. The case study is followed by a comparison of its results with other global studies.

    This book will be useful to the departments of Geography, Public Health, Sociology and Social Work. It will also be of use to professionals and practitioners like city planners, architects, NGOs, Environmentalists, and urban policy makers.

    Biography

    Uzma Ajmal is an ICSSR Post-Doctoral Fellow at Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. She has completed B.Sc. (2012), M.Sc. (2015) and Ph.D. (2020) from Aligarh Muslim University. She has been a topper throughout her University career and has received University Gold Medals in B.Sc. and M.Sc. Geography. She qualified UGC Junior Research Fellowship (2014) in her first attempt. She has received “Young Geographer Award” by Rajasthan Geographical Association (2017) and “Commendation Certificate” in Young Geographer Competition by National Association of Geographers of India (2017). She has more than eight years of research experience in the field of urban and environmental geography. She has also worked as a Research Associate in an ICSSR project. She has published nineteen research papers with National and International publishers of repute like Taylor and Francis, Springer, and Elsevier.

    Saleha Jamal, Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University completed her B.Sc. (2006), M.Sc. (2008) and Ph.D. (2012) from Aligarh Muslim University. Throughout she had a brilliant academic career having obtained University Gold Medal for first position in B.Sc. and M.Sc.She has more than ten years of teaching experience at UG and PG level. She has been awarded with various prestigious scholarships like PG Merit Scholarship (2007), INSPIRE Fellowship (2010), Young Geographer Awards (2010, 2010, 2012) Best Researcher Award (2011) Special Recognition Award on World Wetland Day (2021) and Best Geography Teacher Award (2023). She specialises in the field of Environmental issues-urban, health etc. She is an active researcher and a prolific writer and has published five books and more than 55 research papers in National and International journals of repute. She has completed one major project and presently working with another major project awarded by ICSSR.
