Book Description

This book addresses the concepts of material selection and analysis, choice of structural form, construction methods, environmental loads, health monitoring, non-destructive testing, and repair methodologies and rehabilitation of ocean structures. It examines various types of ocean and offshore structures, including drilling platforms, processing platforms and vessels, towers, sea walls and surge barriers, and more. It also explores the use of MEMS in offshore structures, with regard to military and oil exploration applications. Full-color figures as well as numerous solved problems and examples are included to help readers understand the applied concepts.

Srinivasan Chandrasekaran is a Professor of the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. He has over 24 years of teaching, research, and industrial experience, during which he has supervised many sponsored research projects and offshore consultancy assignment both in India and abroad. He has also been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy (MiUR Fellow) during which time he conducted research on advanced nonlinear modeling and analysis of structures under different environmental loads with experimental verifications. He has published about 130 research papers in international journals and refereed conferences organized by professional societies around the world. He has also authored textbooks, which are quite popular among graduate students in civil and ocean engineering. He is a member of many national and international professional bodies and delivered many invited lectures and keynote addresses at international conferences, workshops, and seminars organized in India and abroad.

Arvind Kumar Jain has been a Professor of Structural Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi for the past 30 years, and has also served as former Head of the Civil Engineering department. He is an active consultant in the infrastructure industry. He has authored several papers published in international journals of high impact factor.

"This book covers essential details of all types of ocean structures, materials, construction and operations. Such a book is not available at present. The coverage about offshore platforms is exhaustive, and the figures used for explanation are superb. The details include concepts, methodology and much information that is scarcely available. I strongly recommend this book to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students related to ocean, offshore, marine and oil & gas engineering, as well as practicing engineers and technical personnel."
— Kurian v. John, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Seri Iskandar, Malaysia

"Highly recommended. The authors are extremely well known in the subject area of ocean structures and have considerable experience in teaching ocean structures to graduate and undergraduate students. The coverage captures the current state of practice and presents it in a straightforward and easily digestible style. Illustrations and figures are impressive. The book incorporates the information based on authors’ extensive research as well as other relevant published data from various widely scattered sources."
