The author proposes that much of psychological suffering can be explained by non-recognition, of our own needs and desires, or those of others. It can be argued that arrogance is a symptom of lack of mutual recognition and in itself a significant obstacle to psychic growth. Giuseppe Civitarese, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist, training and supervising analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI), and member of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) and International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). He lives, and is in private practice, in Pavia, Italy.
