Biography

DR. IRENE G. MAGETO

Dr. Irene G. Mageto is a Senior Lecturer at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa. She holds a PhD in Nursing Science (Forensic Nursing) and an MSc in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from the University of Evansville, Indiana, USA. With over 15 years of experience in nursing education, research, and clinical mentorship, she has taught extensively at undergraduate and graduate levels and supervised numerous Master’s and PhD students to completion. A pioneer of forensic nursing in Kenya, Dr. Mageto has led the development of the model MSc curriculum in Forensic Nursing and has been instrumental in advancing forensic nursing specialty practice nationally. She has served as a Member of the Kenya Board of Mental Health and contributed to the national curriculum and regulatory processes through the Nursing Council of Kenya. Her scholarly work spans mental health, forensic nursing, substance use, oncology nursing, and advanced practice nursing, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in regional and international journals. Her career reflects a deep commitment to strengthening mental health systems, advancing forensic nursing science in Africa, and mentoring the next generation of nurse scholars, clinicians, and leaders.

 

PROF. EUNICE NDIRANGU-MUGO

Professor Eunice Ndirangu-Mugo BSc. Nursing summa cum laude (University of Eastern Africa, Baraton), MSc. Advanced Nursing Practice & PhD Nursing Studies (University of Nottingham, UK). Eunice is Professor and Dean at the Aga Khan University, School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa. She is also the former Chair of Nursing Council of Kenya, the body that regulates Nursing & Midwifery education and practice in Kenya. Eunice has attended and presented in a number of national and international conferences and published throughout the span of her academic career on a wide variety of topics. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK and holds a Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. Eunice is a graduate of the Adaptive Leadership for Africa: Chaos, Complexity and Courage course from the Harvard Kennedy School, Executive Education. She has served in a number of national and international Working Groups. Eunice is interested in the intersection between education and implementation science, generating cultural and social responsive evidence, and linking this to education, practice, research and policy.

 

DR. JOYCE JEBET CHEPTUM

Dr. Joyce Jebet Cheptum is a seasoned midwife, and public health scholar with a PhD in Nursing (Midwifery) from the University of Nairobi, MSc in Public Reproductive Health from Kenyatta University, a BSc in Nursing from Moi University, and a Diploma in Community Health Nursing from Kenya Medical Training College. She is also an Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellow (2021), jointly awarded by the University of Washington and the University of Nairobi. Her research interests include maternal and newborn health, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, maternal mental health, midwifery education, and prevention of female genital mutilation. She has made notable contributions through research, advocacy, and implementation of evidence-based interventions. Dr. Joyce has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and has presented her work at numerous national and international scientific conferences. Currently, she is Faculty at Aga Khan University with over 12 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels, and has mentored numerous students to successful research outputs and conference presentations.

 

DR. SERAH WACHIRA

Dr. Serah Wanjiru Wachira holds a PhD in Nursing Education from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Science in Nursing from Kenya Methodist University, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, magna cum laude, from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK, and a Senior Instructor at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa. With over 20 years of clinical and academic nursing experience, she works in nursing education, critical care, and emergency nursing. She contributes to curriculum development, advanced health assessment education, and clinical mentorship for undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Her scholarly interests include clinical judgment, reflective practice, simulation-based learning, and critical care nursing. Dr. Wachira has published in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to academic book chapters. She is committed to advancing innovative nursing education and strengthening clinical reasoning to improve nursing practice and health outcomes in the region.

 

DR. ISABEL KAMBO

Dr. Isabel Kambo is a Lecturer at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery Kenya campus. She holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of Salford (UK) and a Master’s in Public Health from Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (Philippines).  With over 20 years of experience in Clinical nursing practice, Community health nursing, project management, and Leadership, she has worked in various capacities across East Africa and is currently Vice Dean AKU-SONAM Kenya campus. Her areas of expertise include Clinical nursing practice, Community health nursing, project management and Leadership. She is actively involved in research focusing on primary prevention of NCDs, Health promotion in the workplace, and community health nursing.  Dr. Isabels’ work embodies AKU’s values of Impact, Quality, Relevance and Access as she consistently contributes to solving critical healthcare challenges through her research and teaching. She is passionate about mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and is committed to giving everyone an opportunity to achieve optimum health across their lifespan.
