Raman and SERS Spectroscopy Pioneering Diagnostics and New Horizons in Science and Engineering
Biography
Pola Goldberg Oppenheimer is Chair in Micro-Engineering and Bio-Nanotechnology at the University of Birmingham, where she holds a joint academic appointment in the School of Chemical Engineering and the Healthcare Technologies Institute. Her research spans across physical sciences, materials engineering, and translational healthcare technologies, with a core focus on advanced Raman and SERS spectroscopy, micro/nanofabrication and artificial intelligence for diagnostics. She is internationally recognised for her pioneering work on portable, non-invasive diagnostic platforms for early disease detection, including cancer, traumatic brain injury and rare skin conditions as well as real-time monitoring of food safety and environmental pollutants. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the 2024 Trailblazer Award from the Society of Women Engineers and the L. Johnson Award from the British Biophysical Society. Her work has been widely published in leading journals, and she frequently contributes to international conferences and policy discussions on emerging diagnostic technologies.
