Biography
Amit Ray is a Naval Architect serving in the Indian Navy, presently as Commodore (Naval Design) heading the Submarine Design Group. He has been engaged in design, construction, repairs and trials of warships and submarines in the Navy for more than 25 years.His awards include IIT Kharagpur Director's Gold Medal for M.Tech (Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture) in 2006 and the ‘Medal of Distinction’ of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, UK (2010). His academic qualifications include M.Phil. (Defence & Strategic Studies) from Mumbai University and Ph.D in Submarine Hydrodynamics from IIT Delhi (2010). He has authored more than 30 technical papers and is a Fellow of the Institution of Naval Architects of India. He has been involved in design and development of autonomous underwater systems and related technologies with various Indian institutions and start-ups.His first book, Tracing the Undersea Dragon: Chinese SSBN Programme and the Indo-Pacific, was published in 2021. His second book, Underwater Robotics: Engineering and Applications, was published in 2025.
