Following on from the critically acclaimed The Landscape Lighting Book, this is the lighting design companion every professional and student in landscape architecture needs. Written by an award-winning internationally renowned landscape lighting designer, with over 40 years’ experience in professional practice, The Art of Landscape Lighting takes the reader step-by-step through Janet Lennox Moyer’s design process.

Personal and accessible in tone, the book covers tools, equipment, techniques, effects, installation, design composition and challenges using built case studies spanning the author’s career. Each project takes you through the process of how to plan compositions; selecting what should be lit and what should remain unlit; how to prioritize the importance of multiple elements; balancing brightness relationships; providing visual transportation across scenes; lighting the same space in different ways and, importantly, guidance on when designs are complete.

Lavishly designed and illustrated with 450 full colour photographs, showcasing projects from start to finish, it additionally includes new landscape lighting equipment and techniques developed by Moyer throughout her career. This includes shore scraping, rainwall lighting, approaches for lighting water features and sculptures, and the 3-prong stake.

Aimed at practicing professionals and students in landscape architecture, this book is the must-have inspirational resource that provides you with everything you need to design and implement landscape lighting across multiple scales.

    Biography

Janet Lennox Moyer, FIALD, AOLP, COLD, 2018 IES Trailblazer & Icon, 2017 Michigan Lighting Hall of Fame, began her lighting design career in 1976, working on many diverse projects, from the Defense Intelligence Agency’s first home in Washington, DC to winery caves, entertainment gardens and botanical gardens. She began specializing in landscape lighting in the mid-1980s and wrote the essential book used around the world, The Landscape Lighting Book, first released in 1992 and now in its third edition, integrating the disruptive technology LED.

Jan began teaching in undergraduate school at Michigan State University, next at the University of Michigan, then at The Academy of Art, SF, UC Berkeley, Rutgers and the Lighting Research Center, among others. She founded The International Landscape Lighting Institute, ILLI, a 501(C)(3) educational non-profit still providing landscape lighting education classes in the US and abroad.

Jan met George Gruel, graphic designer and photographer, during the last month of revisions for the second edition book in 2004. They married in 2005 and George produced a book of Jan’s lighting projects, She Paints with Light, to help people visualize landscape lighting. Currently Jan is finishing the last of 20 videos for a new educational platform that Garden Light LED is producing with the IESNA called Learn•Night•Light. Jan and George live in Rio Verde, Arizona.

Jan remains committed to sharing her knowledge and striving to raise the bar for the landscape lighting industry, as she would love everyone to be able to enjoy our planet’s garden spaces after dark.

This sumptuous book, lavishly illustrated by George Gruel, provides both a beautiful book just to leaf through, absorbing the beauty of the landscapes, and also a huge educational resource. The inclusion of daylight shots of the lit areas as well as photos of the different seasons and the changes in landscape and planting over many years provides real information that is rarely shared and only otherwise gained over many years of experience and practice. My only worry is that this will exceed the record currently held by Jan Moyer’s previous Landscape Lighting Book as the one most frequently stolen from my office Library!

Wow! Thank you sooo much for this new, and final book. I think the industry (and everyday people) will benefit greatly from the detail you have gone to in putting this book together. I also love the way the descriptions of each illuminated space are written in mini stories, and also describe your career/life through lighting.

    —Neil Parslow lightvisuals.co.uk, London, UK

One lighting fixture changed my life! As a person with a disability I spend a lot of time on the couch; at the end of said couch is a window that is dark most evenings. That was until Jan sent me a lighting fixture. Now I look at a maple tree decorated for the seasons: bright red in the Fall; snowy white in the Winter; buds in the Spring; and lush green leaves in the Summer. What was once dark is now light. Jan’s breathtaking book illustrates the magic of landscape lighting: whether it is many fixtures illuminating a landscape – or one lighting fixture on a maple tree – Mother Earth is now available year round – how amazing.

    —Catherine Jura writer, Brunswick, NY

This book is a compendium of Jan’s evolution from designer to expert to teacher, and as part textbook and part memoir, allows the reader to understand her growth in skill and sophistication. As a colleague who knows many of the people in her story, especially Michael and George, reading the book is enormously satisfying as much for the story as the result. It is a book to be enjoyed for the dedication of the writer and for her open and honest sharing of a unique and profound career. Not to mention being the best book on landscape lighting one is likely to find on Earth.
