Biography

Julio O. De Castro is the José Mario Álvarez de Novales Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship and Head of the PhD Program at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. Previously, he was the Lewis Family Distinguished Professor of Global Management and Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College, Associate Dean of Research and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Management at Instituto de Empresa, and Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Professor De Castro teaches in the field of entrepreneurship, and his work has appeared in leading publications.

Lorenzo Vicens is an experienced executive and consultant specializing in strategic business development. His accomplished career includes working with leading companies in the Dominican Republic, managing major restructuring projects, and advising growing businesses. A former Director of the MBA Program at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, he is also a university professor, a dynamic speaker, and the author of an acclaimed business novel that reflects his distinctive ability to use storytelling to convey complex business ideas.

"In The Entrepreneurial Journey: The Butterfly’s Evolution from Story to Start-up, De Castro and Vicens deliver a timely masterclass in pedagogy for the Generative AI era. By framing the complexities of venture creation through the immersive narrative of Nela’s startup voyage, the authors move beyond the static delivery of theories that AI can now easily summarize, instead forcing a deep engagement with the entrepreneurial process itself. This novel-style textbook brilliantly addresses the modern classroom challenge, where students possess powerful automated tools but often lack the contextual intuition for "the pivot" or the resilience required for real-world setbacks. It is an essential resource for educators looking to transform students from passive consumers of information into active participants in the messy, human, and transformative journey of building a scalable business in a high-tech landscape."

Dean A. Shepherd, Ray and Milann Siegfried Professor of Entrepreneurship, University of Notre Dame, USA

"Every so often a book comes along that does not just explain how to build a company, it lets you live one. Lorenzo Vicens and Julio De Castro have written that book. Through the  journey of Nela, a Stanford-trained developer who walks away from a comfortable career to chase a vision of her own, The Entrepreneurial Journey narrates the rigorous mechanics of the start-up world, customer discovery, lean experimentation, business models, fundraising, scaling, and the courage of the pivot, through a story so warm and compelling that the lessons land before you notice you are learning them. Rich with character and place from Silicon Valley boardrooms to Dominican beaches at golden hour, this is the rarest kind of business book: one you cannot put down. Inspiring, instructive and quietly profound, it is a book about freedom as much as business; about character as much as capital; about daring, finally, to fly."

Andy Lockett, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Dean, Warwick Business School, United Kingdom

"The Entrepreneurial Journey: The Butterfly’s Evolution from Story to Start-Up by Vicens and De Castro is a rare achievement—an intellectually rich and emotionally compelling book that captures the true spirit of entrepreneurship. By masterfully blending fiction with deep scholarly insight, the authors bring to life the beauty, uncertainty, passion, and resilience that define the entrepreneurial process. They illuminate not only the strategy of venture creation, but also its human side—the hopes, setbacks, sacrifices, and triumphs that shape every founder’s journey. Riveting, engaging, and profoundly educational, this book speaks equally to students, scholars, and aspiring entrepreneurs. It reminds us that entrepreneurship is not simply about building firms; it is about transformation, discovery, and becoming!  You will love it!!"

Shaker A. Zahra, Robert E. Buuck Chair of Entrepreneurship, University of Minnesota, USA

"The Entrepreneurial Journey stands as a modern entrepreneurial bildungsroman in the tradition of Goldratt’s The Goal, and the foundational self-reliance stories of Robinson Crusoe or Jane Eyre. It is a ‘how-to’ story that only truly emerges as the individual discovers ‘who’ they are meant to be. In these narratives, enterprise is the outward expression of an inward change; Nela’s facing her challenges becomes the scaffolding for a more resilient, purpose-driven identity. Vicens and De Castro embrace a wide and complex world, and in Nela, they give us an everyperson we both relate to, learn from and admire."

Jerome Katz, Robert H. Brockhaus Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, St Louis University, USA

"When I started reading The Entrepreneurial Journey: The Butterfly’s Evolution from Story to Start-up, I found myself being drawn into Nela’s voyage.  There are many ways a student can learn about entrepreneurship, but none are as good as helping them to actually live the process. Watching Nela’s vision change and develop is almost as enjoyable as watching how Nela transforms herself as the journey continues.  The analogy of the butterfly emerging and learning to fly is perfect – for that is exactly what Nela does. She deals with betrayals, lawsuits, and many setbacks, but the process teaches her who she really is and what she truly values. Through all of this, however, there are clear lessons about the challenges and requirements of each step in the process of building a start-up. Discussions about funding, finding backers, developing plans, making presentations and learning about customer bases, are presented from the point of view of Nela, but the lessons are clearly there for the fledgling entrepreneur as well. In the end, we see how Nela has grown and the messages she has for young people who are thinking about going out on their own. In short, The Entrepreneurial Journey: The Butterfly’s Evolution from Story to Start-up, is both enjoyable literature and an excellent road map for any potential entrepreneur."

Angelo DeNisi, Cohen Chair of Business, Tulane University, USA

"From the first spark of mission to the tensions of scaling, this book vividly portrays what an entrepreneurial journey truly feels like in practice. It weaves together the hard elements of entrepreneurship—idea initiation, market validation, business metrics, investor persuasion—with the soft but decisive dimensions of personal growth, self-awareness, and resilience. What emerges is not merely a roadmap for building a startup, but a reflective journey for becoming a great entrepreneur—one that helps readers understand not only how ventures evolve, but how the people behind them evolve as well."

Taiyuan Wang, Professor, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), China

"What I find particularly compelling about this book is its ability to make entrepreneurial learning both engaging and deeply relatable. Through Nela, an entrepreneur, and changemaker, it offers a much-needed perspective that expands who can see themselves as entrepreneurs. Beyond tools and frameworks, it portrays entrepreneurship as a journey of personal transformation and impact, inviting readers to rethink their potential with both ambition and honesty."

Rachida Justo, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship, IE Business School, Spain

"In The Entrepreneurial Journey, Lorenzo Vicens and Julio De Castro bridge the gap between academic theory and the high-stakes reality of entrepreneurship in the age of Artificial Intelligence. By following Nela’s evolution from a corporate developer to a startup founder, the authors provide a sophisticated look at key concepts and methods for successfully launching a business, including business model validation and investor relations. This narrative-driven approach does more than teach entrepreneurship. It illuminates the psychological resilience and adaptability required to turn a technical vision into a scalable business reality. It is an essential, immersive guide for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of modern entrepreneurship."

Frederic Delmar, Professor of Entrepreneurship, EM Lyon Business School, France

"Having taught entrepreneurship for more than four decades, I have seen countless textbooks explain theories, frameworks, and tools with technical rigor but limited emotional resonance. The Entrepreneurial Journey: The Butterfly’s Evolution from Story to Start‑up achieves something far more difficult and far more valuable: it brings entrepreneurship to life.

Through narrative storytelling, this book places readers inside the entrepreneurial process itself. Students do not simply learn about opportunity recognition, business models, customer discovery, or scaling; they experience the uncertainty, tension, judgment calls, and personal transformation that define real entrepreneurial journeys. This makes the book especially powerful as a complement to classroom discussion, case analysis, and experiential learning assignments.

In an era shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change, engaging students has become increasingly challenging. This book responds directly to that challenge by combining rigorous entrepreneurial thinking with a compelling story that invites reflection, debate, and application. It is a rare teaching resource that resonates equally with students, educators, and aspiring entrepreneurs. I believe it will become a valuable tool in entrepreneurship courses and a meaningful guide for anyone considering the entrepreneurial path."

Guillermo van der Linde, Professor of Management, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), Dominican Republic

"Entrepreneurship is truly a journey—one in which both you and your venture grow together. In this engaging novel, De Castro and Vicens capture both sides of that journey and weave them into a compelling story about entrepreneurial venturing. The result is a read that is as entertaining as it is educational."

Professor Dr. Marc Gruber, EPFL, Switzerland

"This book offers a rich and compelling portrayal of entrepreneurship as it is actually lived. In Nela’s words, entrepreneurship is “truly a roller coaster of emotions.” This book shows why. Rather than presenting venture creation as a neat, linear process, it brings to life the pivots, uncertainties, and difficult choices that shape the journey, including Nela’s shift from pursuing a dating app to developing a digital smart assistant. Just as importantly, the venture evolves through Nela’s own values, preferences, and relationships with those around her. Readers who want a more honest and deeply human understanding of entrepreneurship will find this book both engaging and insightful."

Maw-Der Foo, Professor and President’s Chair in Entrepreneurship, Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

"Fantastic book to learn entrepreneurship in highly challenging times of technological change, developed in a highly creative way, full of insights and fun to read. Through a compelling narrative, it immerses readers in the real challenges of building a startup, blending rigorous concepts with lived experience and capturing the transformation at the heart of entrepreneurship."

Roberto Vassolo, Professor of Strategic Management, IAE Business School, Argentina
