Biography

Arthur Barker is an associate professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and a registered architect with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). He previously coordinated the professional master’s program and now teaches undergraduate courses in design and the history of architecture, with a focus on the Modern Movement. He coordinates design teaching and the Legacy, Identity, and Memory research field in the Department, positioning South African architectural design within a continuum of theory, practice, and traditions. He represents SACAP as a panel member on the international Canberra Accord for Architectural Education. He is a South African National Research Foundation C2-rated researcher with a main interest in South African post-WW2 Modern Movement architecture.
