Biography

John Etherington is a consultant in rheumatology and rehabilitation medicine and medical director at a musculoskeletal medicine company in London, Pure Sports Medicine. He had a 35-year career in the British Army, becoming the director of defence rehabilitation and was responsible for policy and plans for all forms of rehabilitation across the Armed Forces from 2011-2018.   Previously Clinical Director at Headley Court, he developed the complex trauma rehabilitation services during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. For 3 years, he held the additional post of National Clinical Director for Rehabilitation at NHS England.

 Dr Etherington was a member of the NHS England Clinical Reference Groups for rehabilitation and for emergency preparedness, response and resilience.  Dr Etherington co-chaired the rehabilitation sub-committee of the Regional Trauma Network clinical advisory group which developed the system of trauma networks in England.  He was President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK from December 2018-21 and was awarded an OBE in 2009 and a CBE in 2018.
