My primary interest is the analysis of the sources and the effects of innovation. In particular I focus on processes of knowledge generation and diffusion; structural change in industries and sectors; the dynamics of scientific networks; change in the structure of employment, and the skill content of occupations. My published work on these themes is applied to various empirical domains such as medicine, the environment, higher education, regions and knowledge intensive service activities.
