Areas of Research / Professional Expertise
In 2010 Prof Nolan applied for the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, and was awarded €1.5m (in 2011) to fund a five-year research project, which employs five full-time research investigators. The research project, entitled “CREST” (Central Retinal Enrichment Supplementation Trials) is investigating the impact of supplementation with the macular carotenoids on visual performance in normal subjects, and in patients with AMD.
In addition, he is a Howard Fellow of the Howard Foundation, Cambridge, UK, in support of his research into nutrition and AMD. This Fellowship facilitates my continued research and my position as Chairperson of the Macular Carotenoids Conference 2013. He has also recently been appointed Master of Ceremonies of the Macular Pigment and Nutrition academic and social events at the annual congress of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
In 2013, Prof Nolan became Associate Adjunct Professor at Trinity College, Dublin, as part of his role in directing the vision and AMD component of The Irish LongituDinal Study on Ageing (TILDA).
