Biography

Dr. Worthen received her Ph.D. in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin in 2009 and joined the University of Oklahoma faculty in the fall of 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Sociology, elected faculty member of the Women's and Gender Studies Program, and affiliate faculty member of the Center for Social Justice. In 2016, Dr. Worthen was promoted to full Professor of Sociology. Her major research interests include deviance, prejudice, feminist criminology, LGBTQ Identities, juvenile delinquency, and stigma. She is the author of dozens of articles and has received numerous awards for her work including the University of Oklahoma Irene Rothbaum Outstanding Assistant Professor Award (2013), the Robert D. Lemon Social Justice Award (2013), and the Jill Irvine Leadership Award (2016). She is also the creator of The Welcoming Project, a non-profit organization that works to reduce LGBTQ Negativity in communities around the world.
