Christopher William Herbert

I have had a lifelong interest in Art History and when I became Bishop of St Albans in 1995 was able to develop that further through reading for an M.Phil and then a PhD at the University of Leicester. I have also written a number of books about Christian Spirituality. My latest book "Foreshadowing the Reformation" explores the relationship between Art and Spirituality in the 15th century Low Countries.

I was ordained in Hereford in 1967 and served as a teacher and priest before becoming the Diocesan Director of Education. In 1981 I moved to Guildford Diocese where I was a parish priest and was also responsible for the in-service training of junior clergy. In !990 I was appointed Archdeacon of Dorking and in 1995 I was consecrated as Bishop of St Albans. I retired in 2005 but continue to write and lecture in Art History.
