Born in Guangdong, China and grew up in Hong Kong, Laifong Leung 梁丽芳received her BA from the University of Calgary, MA and Ph.D from the University of British Columbia. She taught Chinese literature, language, and calligraphy at the University of Alberta from 1985 until she took an early retirement in 2008 to focus on writing in Vancouver. She has dedicated herself to the study of contemporary Chinese literature and Chinese-Canadian literature.

Biography

Born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China, but grew up in Hong Kong, Laifong Leung 梁丽芳received her BA from the University of Calgary, MA and Ph.D from the University of British Columbia. She studied classical Chinese literature with Professor Yeh Chiaying and contemporary Chinese literature with Professor Michael Duke. She taught Chinese literature, language, and calligraphy at the University of Alberta from 1985 until she took an early retirement to devote herself to writing in Vancouver. Since the early 1980s, she has dedicated herself to the study of contemporary Chinese literature and Chinese diasporic literature. In 1987, she co-founded the Chinese Canadian Writers’ Association (www.ccwriters.ca) and currently serves as its executive chair.

Contemporary Chinese Fiction Writers: Biography, Bibliography and Critical Assessment. London: Routledge, 2016. Eighty significant writers are included.  

Morning Sun: Interviews with Chinese Writers of the Lost Generation. Routledge, 1994. It presents dialogues with 26 writers mostly former Red Guards and Sent-down Youths during the Cultural Revolution.

History of Literary Interactions between China and Foreign Countries: The China-Canada Volume (Zhongwai wenxue jiaoliushi: Zhong-Jia juan). Editor, co-authored. Jinan: Shandong Education Press, 2015.  This book is one of the 17-volumes on the history of literary interactions between China and foreign countries.

Liu Yong and His Lyrics (Liu Yong jiqi ci zhi yanjiu). Hong Kong: Joint Publishing Co., 1985. The book is a critical study of the lyricist Liu Yong (985?-1053?).

Anthology of Short Fiction from Taiwan (Taiwan xiaoshuo xuan); Anthology of Essays from Taiwan (Taiwan sanwen xuan) and Anthology of Poetry from Taiwan (Taiwan shixuan). Beijing: People’s Literature Press, 1979-1980. These three anthologies about Taiwan literature were the first to appear in the Chinese mainland.
