Leo Granberg is a Scholar in the University of Helsinki (UH), Finland, currently working also in the Uppsala University. He has made sociological field research in Russian countryside and small towns since 2002, being the Professor of Rural Studies in Social Sciences (2005-2013) in UH. His research focus is in local social changes in Russia and the emerging civil society, in global food systems as well as in rural - urban relations.

The differences of urban and rural as social spaces, their functions in society, as well as their mutual dependence is the subject of this chapter, which is studying the evolution of the functions of rural in relation to urban, and how this evolution was reflected in the basic streams of rural research. The text ends by discussing rural research in relation to present social, economic and ecological tendencies in society.
