Suzette Woodward

National Director
Sign up to Safety

Suzette is a paediatric intensive care nurse who has had a fascination with patient safety for over 20 years. This has led to her completing a masters in clinical risk and a doctorate in patient safety implementation. She has experiential learning from working in the NHS in hospitals, in national organisations and at national policy level. She has led large scale nation wide patient safety campaigns and is currently the national director for Sign up to Safety.

Suzette started her career studying nursing in 1979.  She is a qualified registered general nurse who then went on to specialise in paediatrics and then paediatric intensive care.  She worked clinically for over fifteen years progressing to a unit sister and then senior nurse.  Suzette then shifted from hands on clinical work to addressing clinical systems and cultures and was introduced to the world of clinical risk and patient safety - of which she is now one of the leading experts in the NHS.  Suzette has developed thinking and influenced change in incident reporting, incident investigation and implementation of patient safety guidance. She has worked at a national level in the NHS, working at the National Patient Safety Agency and the NHS Litigation Authority - both as board level director posts.  Her recent work has been to explore the impact that campaigning, social movements, behavioural insights and implementation science could have on improving a safety culture and the safety of patient care.
