Federico Ferretti

Associate Professor - University College Dublin, School of Geography

I received my PhD from the Universities of Bologna and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. After research and teaching experiences in Italy, France, Switzerland and Brazil, I am now Associate Professor in the School of Geography at UCD. My research interests lie in philosophy and history of geography and in cultural history, as well as on international circulation of geographical knowledge through critical approaches, with a special focus on Latin America and the Global South.

Biography

I received my PhD from the Universities of Bologna and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2011. I authored, co-authored or edited fifteen books in Italian, French and English, and published research papers in the major international peer-reviewed journals in my field of study, including Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Annals of the American Association of Geographers, Antipode, ACME, cultural geographies, Environment and Planning D - Society and Space, Political Geography, Geopolitics, Geographical Journal, Journal of Historical Geography, Imago Mundi, Geographers Biobibliographical Studies, Geografiska Annaler Series B - Human Geography, Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, Historical Geography, Journal of Geography, História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos, Geographia, Cybergeo, Espace Géographique, Annales de Géographie, and others in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

I am invited author for the Progress in Human Geography report series on 'History and Philosophy of Geography' from 2020 to 2022 (3 papers) and for Geography Compass for 2019, on 'Other Geographical Traditions'.

I am at present Secretary/Treasurer/Webmaster for the Commission History of Geography of the International Geographical Union for the mandate 2016-2020, http://web.univ-pau.fr/RECHERCHE/UGIHG/

Secretary of the History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) of the RGS-IBG for the mandate 2018-2021, in charge of organizing the International Conference for the Centenary of Peter Kropotkin in 2021.  

Member of the Geosciences and Geographical Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy from September 2018.

At UCD, I served as School Director for Global Engagement and member of the College's Internationalization Committee from November 2016 to December 2018 [then on sabbatical research leave from January to June 2019], and as substitute Director for Graduate Studies from January to September 2018 [sabbatical cover].
