My research focuses on Global Englishes and transcultural communication. I have published and presented internationally on the subjects of English as a Lingua Franca, Intercultural Communication, Intercultural Awareness, English language teaching, and English Medium Instruction.

Biography

I joined the staff in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton in 2009 and am currently the Deputy Director of the Centre for Global Englishes and an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics. My research focuses on Global Englishes and intercultural communication and I also supervise doctoral students in these areas as well as convening an MA programmes in Global Englishes.
Prior to becoming a lecturer at Southampton I undertook a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton on the subject of intercultural awareness and intercultural communication through English. Before this, I taught at Silpakorn University in Thailand for 5 years. I worked as an English language teacher for over 10 years in both the UK and Thailand at all levels, but specialising in English for Academic Purposes.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    I have published and presented internationally on the subjects of English as a Lingua Franca, Intercultural Communication, Intercultural Awareness, English language teaching, and English Medium Instruction. This includes the recently published 'Routledge Handbook of English as a lingua franca' for which I am co-editore.  I also published a monograph ‘Culture and Identity through English as a Lingua Franca’ (De Gruyter Mouton). I am the co-editor of the book series ‘Developments in English as a Lingua Franca’ (De Gruyter Mouton). I serve on the editorial boards for a number of international journals in applied linguistics and am a member of the AILA English as a Lingua Franca research network.
