Jon Steinar Gudmundsson

Originally from Iceland, educated in Scotland and England in chemical and process engineering. Worked first on geothermal engineering in Iceland and later as the manager of the Stanford Geothermal Program and Associated Professor of petroleum engineering. Back in Iceland, was the director of the UNU Geothermal Training Programme. Moved on to Norway and has been a professor of petroleum engineering at NTNU in Trondheim for over 25 years.


Current position is professor emeritus in petroleum engineering at NTNU in Trondheim. Now, Principal Consultant, Pardus AS ( Educated in chemical engineering in Edinburgh (Scotland) and Birmingham (England). Worked in geothermal engineering in my native Iceland for many years. From 1981, was an associated professor of petroleum engineering and the manager of the Stanford Geothermal Program. From 1985, served as the director of the UNU Geothermal Training Programme in Reykjavík. In 1989, was appointed professor of petroleum engineering at NTNU, specialising in production engineering and natural gas. Fluid flow has been central in my R&D, advising masters and doctoral students on a wide-range of topics. Long-term activities include new technology for the storage and transport of frozen natural gas hydrate (and cold-flow), in cooperation with industrial partners. Also, the development of a new technology (pressure pulse) to monitor deposit thickness in pipelines, now available from a major service company. I’m a member of scientific academies in Iceland and Norway, and the professional societies TEKNA (Norwegian Society of Graduate Technical and Scientific Professionals) and SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers). Community service includes eight years on the Trondheim City Council. Importantly, I'm married and has three grown-up children and two grandchildren.

    Fluid flow from oil and gas reservoirs to surface facilities. Processing of oil and gas offshore and on land. Inventor of natural gas hydrate technology for storage and transport of natural gas.
