Biography

BTech (Civil Engg-1978) & MTech (Environmental Science and Engg-1980) from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Doctor of Environmental Engg from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand in 1984. Joined Centre for Environmental Science and Engg at IIT Bombay as a faculty in 1984. Left IIT Bombay in 1995 to set up Environmental Management Centre LLP. Established Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation - a Section 8 Not for Profit Company in 2012

Served as  Dean, IL&FS Academy for Applied Development (IAAD) and functioned as Chief Sustainability Officer at IL&FS Ltd, between 2013-2016. Earlier worked as Corporate Consultant (Environment) for IL&FS between 1996 to 2013

Worked with almost all key UN, multi-lateral and bi-lateral developmental institutions in the world. Prominent amongst these include UNEP Geneva, Paris and Osaka offices; UNDP and UNDESA, New York, UNIDO, Vienna; DFID, London; GIZ and CDG, Germany; APO, Tokyo; SIDA, Embassy of the Netherlands, New Delhi; FAO, the World Bank , IFC and the Asian Development Bank.

Apart from Government of India and various State Governments, advised Governments of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Mauritius, Thailand and Vietnam.

Published books with UN University on EIA (translations in Chinese, Japanese), Tokyo; Oxford University Press; UNEP, Paris on Textile Industry and Environment and Centre for Environmental Education in India on Waste Minimization. Authored a book on "Environmental Management Towards Sustainability" with CRC Press.

Served as Hon Editor of the Journal of Indian Water Works between 1998 and 2004. Coordinated Chapter on Waste Management & Recycling in UNEP's Green Economy Report; Chapter on Waste and Resource Management in UNEP/ISWA's  Global Waste Management Outlook; Waste Management Chapter in Shanghai Manual. Columnist in Green Prospects Asia. Recently invited on India Resources Panel  by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. Currently Lead Author of UNEP's Asia Waste Management Outlook.

Recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of AITAA in 2010 for Significant Contribution to International Affairs. Elected as Board Certified Member at American Association of Environmental Engg Currently, Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Technology Alternatives in Rural Areas at IIT, Bombay.
