My research on magic started with an undergraduate degree in anthropology and sociology and then a PhD in anthropology published as Magic, Witchcraft and the Otherworld in 2000. Now many publications later, I'm still researching and a working on a volume developing magical consciousness. I've lectured in anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and on altered states of consciousness at the University of Sussex. I now lecture internationally.

Biography

I gained my PhD in anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London, where I also lectured on the anthropology of religion and the anthropology of the body. Since then I lectured courses at the University of Sussex on Shamanic Consciousness and Altered States of Consciousness. My major publications include Magic, Witchcraft and the Otherworld (Berg, 2000), The Nature of Magic (Berg 2005), The Anthropology of Magic (Berg 2009), Magical Consciousness (with Erik Goodwyn) (Routledge 2016), and Developing Magical Consciousness (in preparation for Routledge 2018).

Education

    BA (Hons) 1987
    PhD (London) 1997

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

My areas of research and professional expertise lie in developing magical consciousness as a theoretical notion, and also as individual experience. For many years at the University of Sussex I ran academic courses that aimed to expand students' knowledge of alternate modes of consciousness through practical application and analytical study. I now teach these courses privately while continuing to lecture internationally.

Personal Interests

My personal interests correspond with my professional life, and I enjoy teaching others about the research I'm passionate about. My other interests include yoga and walking.
