Senior Fellow and Head of Mediterranean and Middle East Programme
Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI)

I am an expert on Middle Eastern politics and currently work on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, transatlantic relations in the Mediterranean, and domestic and regional politics in the Middle East and North Africa. Among my research interests there are also the relations between the European Union and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and energy dynamics in the Euro-Mediterranean region. I speak Arabic fluently and have travelled extensively in the MENA region.

Biography

Throughout my academic and professional career I have always focused on the Middle East and North Africa trying to develop my expertise in the field of comparative politics of the region, Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, democratization and conflict studies.

I also have a strong interest in regionalism within the region and have studied it from the bottom up and non-European perspective.

I hold a PhD in comparative politics from the Università Normale of Pisa (Florence branch) with a thesis on comparative institutional and political transition in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco between 2011 and 2014. I also got a Masters' Degree in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)-University of London in 2008.
