I am a Senior Lecturer in Law. My research focuses on terrorism, counterterrorism law and policy, terrorist electronic communications, policing and surveillance, cybercrime, international human rights and civil liberties.

Biography

Simon is an expert in terrorism and counterterrorism preventative legal measures & UK governmental policy (CONTEST). His expertise includes law enforcement & surveillance of electronic communications (Ecomms), data privacy & human rights (ECHR & EUCFR). Broadly, his research interests cover global security, cyber security, terrorism, terrorist electronic communications, international human rights & civil liberties, organised crime & piracy.

Simon is a Senior Lecturer in Law & a passionate, dedicated lecturer, focused on nurturing a positive student experience & on learning & teaching. He is a great believer in modernisation & positive change, & always keen to develop new skills.

Simon has published much of his work on terrorism & counterterrorism issues, with his monograph ‘Digital Privacy, Terrorism and Law Enforcement', receiving endorsement & recommendation by other leading experts such as Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE QC. Bringing together such expertise, in 2019 he completed an edited collection, including chapter, titled, Terrorism & State Surveillance of Communications’. He has recently completed a publication titled' 'Combating Online Extremist Recruitment: The Criminalisation of Opinion & Bellief'.

Simon is a peer reviewer for the Liverpool Law Review, the Taylor & Francis International Journal ‘The Law Teacher’, & the ‘Asian Journal of International Peace and Security’, & Routledge, providing reviews for books on Terrorism, Extremism, Policing & Surveillance.
