BiographyI am an expert in terrorism and counterterrorism preventative legal measures & UK governmental policy (CONTEST). My expertise includes law enforcement & surveillance of electronic communications (Ecomms), data privacy & human rights (ECHR & EUCFR). Broadly, his research interests cover global security, cyber security, terrorism, terrorist electronic communications, international human rights & civil liberties, organised crime & piracy.
A Senior Lecturer in Law & Counterterrorism Policing, I am the LLB Level 6 Year Leader at Edge Hill University. Within the Department of Law & Criminology, I work across three programmes, being module leader for Counter Terrorism (BSc Professional Policing), & Property Law (LLB). I also deliver Public Law & Criminal Law, & Advanced Legal Skills. I am currently designing the curriculum for a new taught interdisciplinary Masters covering Cyber Regulation & Policy.
I am a passionate & dedicated lecturer, focused on nurturing a positive student experience & on learning & teaching (see recommendations below). I'm a great believer in modernisation & positive change, & always keen to develop new skills, & use my passion & dedication to increase student engagement & learning.
I have published much of my work on terrorism & counterterrorism issues, with my monograph ‘Digital Privacy, Terrorism and Law Enforcement', receiving endorsement & recommendation by other leading experts such as Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE QC. Bringing together such expertise, in 2019 I completed an edited collection, including my own chapter, titled, Terrorism & State Surveillance of Communications’. I have recently completed a publication titled' 'Combating Online Extremist Recruitment: The Criminalisation of Opinion & Bellief'.
My application to the Modern Law Review Seminar Fund was successful, for a Conference to take place at Edge Hill University June 2021, titled 'Victims of Terrorism and State Responses'. The Conference is in collaboration with the Institute for Social Responsibility & in partnership with the Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball Peace Foundation.
I am a peer reviewer for the Liverpool Law Review, the Taylor & Francis International Journal ‘The Law Teacher’, & the ‘Asian Journal of International Peace and Security’, & Routledge, providing reviews for books on Terrorism, Extremism, Policing & Surveillance.
