David Carless

The University of Hong Kong

I started my career as a language teacher in secondary schools teaching French in England, and then English in Hong Kong. I worked in the Education University of Hong Kong from 1993-2005. I am currently a Professor in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong where I have served in various leadership capacities, including Head of Academic Units, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) and Interim Dean.

My broad research interest is in how assessment processes can facilitate the development of productive student learning. My specific research focus is on feedback for student learning in higher education. I analyze how students respond to feedback; feedback processes in different disciplines; and the development of teacher and student feedback literacy. The overall goal of the research program is to develop and theorize sustainable feedback processes where students are gradually prepared for lifelong learning.
