Elena is a Language Tutor and teaches on the University-wide Language Programme and Russian Studies courses. She holds a PhD degree in Methodology of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language from the Pushkin Russian Language Institute in Moscow. Her area of focus is the Methodology of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language with interest in communicative, innovative language teaching and learning.


Elena joined the University of Manchester in 2010, having previously taught at Moscow State University, Russia.
She has worked on CEELBAS projects related to teaching Russian as a Foreign Language:  “The Development of Reading Skills of Russian History  PhD Students (Based on Modern Russian Media Sources)” (co-authored,  2015), “Training PhD Students in Abstracting and Annotation Skills” (2017), intended for PhD students in Russian Studies who are doing research on Russian media and socio-political issues.
Elena is passionate about Russian culture which she is determined to encourage in her work with students.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Elena's professional interests lie in the fields of technology-enhanced language learning, innovative use of educational tools and its evaluation in language teaching, and the integration of technology for blended/distance learning.

Personal Interests

    Her  interests outside work include folk dancing, ceramic painting, hill walking and keeping fit.
