Associate Professor
Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Karthik Raman is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Bhupat & Jyoti Mehta School of Biosciences, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He has been a researcher in the area of systems biology for the last 15+ years; his lab works on computational approaches to understand and manipulate biological networks, with applications in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology.

Biography

Dr. Karthik Raman has been at IIT Madras since 2010, where he leads a group that primarily focusses on computational methods to understand and manipulate biological networks. A key focus of the group is in understanding various microbiomes, ranging from the gut microbiome to extreme microbiomes, such as the International Space Station, or hydrothermal vents. His group builds scalable algorithms to study various kinds of networks and is also interested in analysis of multi-omic biological data.

Since 2015, Dr. Raman co-ordinates the Initiative for Biological Systems Engineering, which comprises several faculty from various disciplines, united by their common interest in applying network science or machine learning to tackle biological problems. He is also a core member of the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI), which is a premier centre in the country in the forefront of various key areas of AI.

In 2017, with colleagues from IIT Bombay and IISc Bengaluru, Dr. Raman founded qBiome Research Private Limited, a research consultancy enterprise, which develops solutions for bioprocess and biopharma industries.

Dr. Raman is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher, who has taught multiple courses in the interface of computing and biology, to graduate and undergraduate students. He also has an MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Computational Systems Biology, on the NPTEL/SWAYAM platforms.
