Richard Shane Ritter

Dr. Shane Ritter, PE is currently the Chair and Professor of Engineering at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL. Dr. Ritter has served as Director of Electrical Engineering for several firms over his 25 year career as a consulting engineer.


Dr. Ritter joined Olivet’s Department of Engineering as chair and professor in 2014. His passion is to work with and train young engineers for leading companies, mission trips and organizations, and the world.

With 25 years of experience in the engineering design industry, he is the owner and director of electrical engineering of Ritter Engineering, P.C. He is also a licensed professional engineer in 40 states and Canada, and has served as the director of electrical engineering/principal electrical engineer with Perigon International. Both companies are based in the Charlotte, N.C. area. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors of I-TEC (, a Christian electrical engineering mission organization located in Montoursville, Pennsylvania.

At Olivet, he stepped into a booming engineering program in which student enrollment has tripled since 2009. To accommodate the growing program, engineering design labs and a new three-story wing dedicated to the study of technology and innovation are being added to Olivet’s Reed Hall of Science.

Much of Dr. Ritter’s professional and academic career has involved working with and studying different aspects of light. Since 2006, he has conducted research in the field of meta-materials and their effects on light and electromagnetic waves. The ultimate goal of much of this research is to develop the perfect lens and cloaking materials. Both of these efforts involve the development of new types of materials, some which can be produced using MakerBot or 3D printers. In addition to this, he has been involved in the industrial and commercial construction industry for the past 25 years.

He is also working with Dr. Michael Fiddy of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte to write “An Introduction to Inverse Imaging from Scattered Fields” — a senior-to graduate-level textbook for engineering, physics and/or mathematics students and professionals that is due out in November 2014.

His professional certifications include: Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) by the Building Industry Consulting Service International; National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) Lighting Certification; and USGBC (U.S Green Building Council) LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Accredited Professional.

During his career, Dr. Ritter has also worked for Cypress Semiconductor; Phase IV Systems; Padia Consulting; Syska Hennessy Group; TLC Engineering for Architecture; and Harrell, Mantai & Hopper, P.C. (formerly Telesis Solutions). He has also served as an adjunct faculty member for ITT Technical Institute and the University of Phoenix. He has worked on projects with engineering firms located in Canada, Germany, Israel, Japan, and Haiti.

Personal Interests

    In addition to engineering, Dr. Ritter has a passion for music (keyboard, guitar, trumpet and voice), and he has been actively involved in leading worship for the past 30 years. He also enjoys participating in competitive sports — particularly softball and basketball — and strategy puzzles and games, especially chess.
